Neanderthals Were Just As Bright As Modern Humans

Recent studies point out that Neanderthals might have had a lot more going on than people think, as the careful observation of several stone tools shows that the manufacturing process was as good as the one done by the ancestors of modern humans, Homo sapiens.

The research, done by a team from the University of Exeter in southwest England, is looking into the reasons that led to the extinction of Neanderthals more than 28,000 years ago, after 10,000 years of sharing the same space with modern humans.

"Our research disputes a major pillar holding up the long-held assumption that Homo sapiens were more advanced than Neanderthals. It is time for archaeologists to start searching for other reasons why Neanderthals became extinct while our ancestors survived," explained experimental archaeologist Metin Eren, who was involved in the study.

She also talked about the technology identified in the tool-making process. According to the results, there is no significant difference between them, placing the Neanderthal population at ‘different’ rather than at ‘less advanced’ or ‘ stupid.’

Some studies say that the reason why Neanderthals may have died is directly linked to their incapacity of dealing with the weather conditions during the last Ice Age, as the cold temperatures and the disappearance of forests made their life difficult and ruined their hunting methods, with species such as mammoth and bison fleeing south.

The research was published in the Journal of Human Evolution and even though it does not answer the main issue, it can certainly be considered a starting point.
