"Grey's Anatomy" star Katherine Heigl's not going anywhere for now, despite rife speculation her character Dr. Isobel "Izzy" Stevens, would be killed off.
A statement from ABC entertainment president Stephen McPherson aiming to shake away any doubts the actress would be leaving the doctor drama said "She's absolutely staying with the show."
"There's an unbelievable storyline for her which is really central to everything that’s going to go on this season. We’re really excited about that." McPherson added Wednesday at the Television Critics Association’s annual fall preview.
Rumors started circulating that Heigl, who scooped up the Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series Emmy award last year, might be leaving the show after she snubbed "Grey's Anatomy" writers by publicly announcing she was pulling out from this year's Emmy race due to unworthy material.
"I did not feel that I was given the material this season to warrant an Emmy nomination and in an effort to maintain the integrity of the academy organization, I withdrew my name from contention," Heigl infamously told the Los Angeles Times in June. "In addition, I did not want to potentially take away an opportunity from an actress who was given such materials."
Online reports suggested that her statement had pissed off the show's producers to the point they decided to kill her character off with a fatal brain tumor.
"(Producer) Shonda (Rhimes) and the writers are pissed at her," a source was quoted by Usmagazine.com as saying. "It's their way of screwing with her. She won't know whether she's going to live or die."
However, McPherson refused to give away any secrets but insisted that the 29-year-old "is a fantastically talented actress."
"Whenever there is turmoil on a show, it's unfortunate," he added. "I never like to see when any of them take it lightly...There's so many people who work so unbelievably hard, everyone from the grips to the writers to the EPs."
"Grey's Anatomy" creator Shonda Rhimes won't be at press tour until Thursday, so further questions about Heigl will have to wait.
