“Dr Horrible”: Crashing Site: Check!, Big Hit: Check!

The only thing bad about “Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog” is the name, because everything else was good. It was so good that, according to Variety, it kind of crashed the site drhorrible.com. It had 200,000 hits per hour.

The web musical presents Dr. Horrible, played by the not-at-all-horrible Neil Patrick Harris, who wants to join the Evil League of Evil, a league which gathered the best bad guys. Even if he tries to live up to his name, Dr. Horrible is cute and funny and not at all scary. His ray guns are always broken, and his laughter needs improvement. Oh, he also has a blog.

Joss Whedon, Dr.Horrible’s creator, also came up with “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and “Firefly.” So, you understand the need to make such characters that start singing every three minutes. The three-part program with Neil Patrick Harris, Nathan Fillion and Felicia Day could be downloaded via Apple’s iTunes for $1.99 or watched for free on drhorrible.com. “Dr. Horrible” was no.1 on iTunes TV downloads after it went live.

The first of the show’s three 15-minute episode was broadcast Tuesday at midnight and everyone wanted to see it, but international viewers couldn’t watch it because the Hulu video player was not working for them. The same thing happened to those who paid to download it. Then it happened..the site crashed as so many viewers were trying to see Dr. Horrible.

Joss Whedon paid for “Dr. Horrible” from his own budget. He came up with the idea while the writers were on strike. The program was written by Joss Whedon, Jed and Zack Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen.

“We had nobody to check in with. There was nobody giving us notes. There were no rules—and there still aren’t. That’s why the Internet is cool,” said Maurissa Tancharoen, according to the Los Angeles Times.

The next segment of “Dr. Horrible” will go live Thursday and the last Saturday.
