On the occasion of the TV Critics Assn. tour Friday, Cartoon Network screened the first episode of its new animated series “Star Wars: Clone Wars,” though they were asked not to disclose too many details about it, Variety reports.
The first half-hour episode was enough to convince television critics that the visuals are amazing the animation is almost three-dimensional, and these features compensated for the rather clunky dialogue.
Comprising the period between the fifth and the sixth features “Attack of the Clones” and “Revenge of The Sith,” “Clone Wars” was developed by Lucasfilm and will depict the adventures of Anakin Skywalker and Obi-wan Kenobi. This first episode shows Jedi master Yoda in a diplomatic mission on a strange planet, trying to reconcile with the forces of Count Dooku and surpass several obstacles. The episode also introduces a new villain, in the form of the gothic Ventress, which is an apprentice of Count Dooku. The series' supervising director, David Filoni, described her as “a bit sensuous” and “serpent-like.”
The episode will air on Cartoon Network and TNT sometime in the fall, and will be followed by another 21 episodes from the animated series.
The series will come shortly after the premiere of an animated movie of the same name, on August 10. These two are supposed to fill a void for “Star Wars” fans who are always craving for something new related to their favorite movies to look forward to.
Asked whether he thought the series would be enjoyed also by people who haven’t grown up watching the “Star Wars” films, Filoni said: “Every time I go to Toys R Us, I see kids picking up light sabers and imagining they're in a galaxy far, far away. I hope those fans will watch and enjoy this. And maybe listen to Yoda.”
