Wireless carrier T-Mobile, the American division of the german Deutsche Telekom AG, wants to compete with AT&T, Verizon and Vonage on the VoIP market. The company has announced that starting July 2 it will offer a calling plan at $10 a month which will allow subscribers to make unlimited national calls from their home phones.
People who want to benefit of the offering must already have a calling plan of at least $40 with T-Mobile for one of its mobile services, and will also have to buy a $50 wireless router that will be installed in their home. In addition to that, future subscribers will need to have broadband internet installed to their homes. The subscribers will be able to keep their existing phone numbers and will be able to use the router for both normal and cordless phones.
The service, which is called T-Mobile @Home” will also feature call waiting, caller ID, call-forwarding, voice mail and three-way conferencing, without any additional tax.
The way the service works is the following: the router receives traditional signals from the phones and converts them to a standard that it then uses to route them over the internet to their destination. Once they arrive there, the reverse process takes place, assuring they reach their target safely.
T-Mobile has said that it has created the service to satisfy the persons who would like to stop using landlines, but feel that they need to keep them as it makes them feel more secure. T-Mobile has said that already a sixth of all landline subscribers have given up the services.
