On Monday, Don Imus was discussing with sports announcer Warner Wolf, on his radio show, when the case of Adam “Pacman” Jones came up. The Dallas Cowboys football star was suspended again and Wolf was talking about his arrest. Don Imus asked about the cornerback’s color and, when Wolf told him Jones was African American, Imus said: “There you go. Now we know.”
While most people took this remark as a racist remark, Imus said he never meant it that way. He added that he wanted to make a “sarcastic point” that Jones was treated unfair because of his color. Imus said that the allegations were “ridiculous,” especially when he had two African American colleagues and also a black producer.
“How insane would I have to be? What would I be thinking?” reported the Boston Herald.
The case is different from the one when Imus called the Rutgers University women’s basketball team “nappy headed ho’s,” getting fired by MSNBC and CBS Radio, as Phil Boyce, WABC boss and chief of talk radio for Citadel, said that he talked to Imus an advised him to explain what he meant in the next show. Imus did exactly as told and yesterday he explained what he wanted to say by his remark. Boyce gave his full support to Imus.
Karith Foster, Imus’ co-worker, was on his side, saying that people should have the whole context in order to realize that it was no racist remark.
“People who interpret what you said as racist clearly didn't hear the whole thing, and they don't know who you are and what the program is about,” reported Newsday.
Jones said that he wasn’t happy with Imus’ remark and he was hoping that the radio station would take some measures.
Boyce said that the station would try to talk to Jones and convince him to appear on the show.
