The leading video game retailer GameStop has disclosed that one month ago it decided to stop selling Microsoft’s MP3 player, Zune. GameStop said that the reason behind its decision is the “lack of appeal” of Microsoft’s device.
People who are still interested in buying Zune from GameStop will be able to do this only online and only until the current stock will sell out.
GameStop also said that one of the factors that led to the decision of giving up Zune sales was the fact that it does not match the product types they are offering (video games and related hardware). However, Microsoft has previously announced that the XNA Studio developers are able to use the Zune as a multiplayer wireless mobile gaming platform.
Even though the move could seem as a blow for Microsoft, the
company has declared that Zune sells better and better lately. Furthermore, the
Microsoft’s mp3 player, Zune, was created after the company witnessed the success of Xbox, a gaming console that represented the software giant’s first attempt to sell hardware that could not be bundled with its other products.
Even though Zune is backed up by a social networking site, the player has always been far behind Apple’s iPod. While Zune has sold 2 million units since its release in November 2006, during the same period Apple sold more than 80 million iPods.
