UC Berkeley Graduate, 22, Found Dead

Alan Kaname Hamai, 22, was found dead Saturday morning on the front yard of his residence. He was a UC Berkeley graduating senior and his ceremony had taken place hours before the tragedy happened. His had a degree in anthropology.

According to the Los Angeles Times, authorities said that the student fell from the roof of his building. The house was three-story high. Police officers still don’t know if the young man’s fall was an accident.

His residence was in Redondo Beach, at the intersection of Durant and Bowditch Street. His body was found by one of his neighbors and Alameda County coroner's office pronounced him dead at 6:40 a.m. An autopsy will be performed today, reported the Los Angeles Times.

His parents were returning home when they were told about their son death.

All members of the University were very troubled by the news and they expressed their condolences to the family. All the people who knew Hamai spoke highly of him, saying he had a great career ahead.

According to the Los Angeles Times, UC Chancellor Robert Birgeneau said that this was a tragic situation and expressed his sympathy towards the victim’s family.

Hamai is the second UC Berkeley student who died this month. Christopher Wooten, 21, was stabbed on May 3, in a sorority parking. His killer, a student at Berkeley City College, was arrested.

Police are investigating Hamai’s death.
