Actor Dennis Farina, star of TV series “Law & Order,” was arrested on Sunday at Los Angeles International airport for carrying a loaded gun in his carry-on luggage on his way to board a plane.

When the .22-caliber handgun was discovered at the security checkpoint, Farina told police he had brought the gun with him while driving from Arizona to Los Angeles and then he completely forgot about it, police said in a statement.

"Farina was very apologetic and cooperative with officers," police said, as reported by Reuters. "However, he had no apparent authority to carry a concealed weapon at the time of his arrest."

The airport’s police said this kind of incidents happen regularly: people forget they have guns in their carry-on luggage.

"People don't get it," Police Sgt. Jim Holcomb said, according to the Los Angeles Times. "When you go to an airport, the only people that can carry a gun are federal agents."

The actor’s bail was initially set at $25,000, as he was charged with carrying a loaded firearm. The charge was later changed, becoming felony, after police confirmed the gun was not registered, and the bail was raised to $35,000.

Farina, 64, was released after posting bail on Sunday night, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Web site informs.

The actor’s latest film, featuring Ashton Kutcher and Cameron Diaz, titled “What Happens in Vegas,” opened Friday.

Farina is a former Chicago police officer who built a Hollywood career playing detectives in several movies. Beside “Law & Order,” he appeared in “Snatch,” “Saving Private Ryan,” “Get Shorty.”
