After nearly six years of countless delays, and although his attorneys threw a last-minute motion for yet another postponement, R. Kelly's will finally stand on trial on child pornography charges.
The jury selection is to begin Thursday in Chicago, in the trial of the Grammy-winning R&B singer, The Associated Press reported.
The Chicago-native singer was brought to court after police discovered a videotape of him having sex with a girl as young as 13.
However, prosecutors face a tough task because the girl is now 23 years old and she said it’s not her in the video recording. R. Kelly – birth name Robert Sylvester Kelly – also denies any involvement.
"How is there not reasonable doubt when the two people say it's not them?" said Michael Helfand, a Chicago attorney not involved in the case according to New York Daily News.
The 41-year-old R&B singer, best known for his "I Believe I Can Fly" song, faces up to 15 years in prison if convicted.
The defense attorneys made more than 30 pretrial motions to delay the trial. Then Judge Vincent Gaughan suffered some fractures after falling from a ladder at home and R. Kelly had to undergo an emergency surgery for a ruptured appendix. All these contributed to the postponement of the trial for almost six years.
The Grammy Award winner has already settled three lawsuits which brought similar accusations against him.
The video tape will be shown in open court as the judge ruled.
