Ten people from a Largo nursing home and one staff member needed medical attention on Sunday morning after something made them sick.

Largo Fire Rescue personnel responded to Grand Villa, an assisted living facility at 750 Starkey Road in Largo at 7.45 a.m. Residents in the center’s Alzheimer’s wing were complaining of flu like symptoms including nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. There were 20 patients in that section of the facility.

Nine people were taken to Sun Coast Hospital in Largo and one person went to Morton Plant Hospital in Clearwater. The employee was released from the hospital the same day, but some of the patients had to be kept overnight, said John Moschner, director of operations for Grand Villa, according to local Tampabay.com.

Following the incident, officials called in hazardous materials teams from Largo and St. Petersburg to inspect the air quality and air conditioning of the facility. However, they weren’t able to find anything wrong and allowed the residents to get back inside the facility.

Brian Brady, Largo Fire Rescue district chief said a viral infection could have caused the people to become sick.

Health department inspectors were expected today to tour the facility and see if they could figure out what made people there sick.
