Grammy-nominated band The Raconteurs decided to skip the
usual four-month publicity before the release of a new album. They shocked
their fans by announcing they would release the advertisement-free album called
“Consolers of the Lonely” in only one week. On their website, a note reads the
following explanation:
“With this release, The Raconteurs are forgoing the usual
months of lead time for press and radio set up, as well as forgoing the all
important "first week sales". We wanted to explore the idea of
releasing an album everywhere at once and THEN marketing and promoting it
thereafter. The Raconteurs would rather this release not be defined by it's
first weeks sales, pre-release promotion, or by someone defining it FOR YOU
before you get to hear it.”
Apparently, Jack White decided to collaborate with Warner
Bros., in order to launch the band’s LP.
The move comes shortly after bands like Radiohead or Nine
Inch Nails interrupted collaboration with recording companies and became
successful free agents. Nine Inch Nails gained around $1.6 million last week,
after releasing its new instrumental album online.
The second LP of The Raconteurs will reportedly be available
everywhere from Tuesday. It will be released in vinyl and CD formats, as well
as in digital formats. The album consists of 14 tracks and it was finished the
first week of March.
The band - featuring Jack White, Brendan Benson, Patrick Keeler and Little
Jack Lawrence – wanted the album to be launched on the 25th of
March, but probably not all stores will be able to move this fast.
According to NME, a video of the band for the song “Salute Your Solution”
will also appear online on March 25.
