The suspect in the murder of 23-year-old Susannah Chase, who was found dead in an ally near her house on December 21, 1997, has been arrested, police officials announced on Sunday. Diego Olmos-Alcade, 38, was detained on first-degree murder, second-degree kidnapping and first-degree sex assault charges on a $5 million bail.

According to police reports, a DNA match pointed out Olmos-Alcade as the main suspect. He had already served time in prison for kidnapping and he also violated his parole: “Obviously, the department is ecstatic over this,” Police Chief Mark Beckner said. “When you solve a case like this, it’s always a great feeling and makes policing worthwhile.”

Susannah Chase’s family has been notified of the arrest on Friday, one day after police investigators found out about the DNA match on Thursday. The suspect was arrested in the Denver area, at his mother’s home in Aurora, after breaking his parole in October, and he was already in jail when police linked him to the murder of Susannah Chase.

The family of the victim released a written statement following the arrest: “As you might imagine, our emotions have run the gamut since we first heard of the DNA match in Susannah’s case. We are delighted that a suspect has been identified and apprehended.”

According to Beckner, no other suspects are believed to be involved in the murder case and there is other evidence besides the DNA one that pin point the suspect to the time and place of the murder, but further details were not given. The victim was apparently chosen randomly, but there are still many aspects of the crime investigators need to figure out.

The DNA evidence revealed that the killer was either Hispanic or Native American, but the suspect was hard to identify as he was only recently introduced into the Wyoming police database. Ten years have passed since Susannah’s death, but investigators are convinced they are on the verge of finally learning the truth about what happened that night to the 23-year-old victim.
