Dublin Man Killed as He Tries to Cross I-880
The corpse of a man lay by the highway for approximately five hours on Monday after he was apparently hit by a vehicle as he was trying to cross Interstate 880 on foot.

The dead man was identified by the Alameda County Coroner's Office as 28-year-old Jesus Magallon Sanchez from Dublin.

California Highway Patrol Officer Oscar Johnson said the police officers investigating the case believe that the man from Dublin had been apparently driving westbound on I-238 and tried to cross northbound I-880 when he got a flat tire.

Sanchez pulled his car over to fix the flat tire and for an unknown reason tried to cross the interstate on foot. Authorities investigating the case said they believe Sanchez was hit by a gray Dodge Charger driven by a 37-year-old Fremont woman.

The woman pulled over her vehicle after the impact and called the California Highway Patrol at about 1:30 a.m. to report the accident. An officer was quickly deployed at the scene of the accident and took a report from the woman.

"She was unclear if a car had hit her or if she had hit a part of a car in the roadway," he said. The woman later said "she was unaware that she had hit a person," Johnson said.

"Then this morning after we found the body, we looked through incidents from last night in the area and matched up the color of her car (to evidence left at the scene)," Johnson said.

The dead body lying by the highway was also reported to the CHP at about 7:14 a.m. by a motorist who called and said the corpse was wrapped in bags on the shoulder of southbound I-880 north of the Washington Avenue overpass. Police said the bags were probably trash that blew up against the body.

Sanchez’s body was transported to the office of the Alameda County Coroner in Oakland and all southbound lanes on I-880 were closed to traffic at 7:50 a.m. causing the traffic on the freeway to back up as officials investigated the scene.

All lanes were reopened to traffic at 8:53 a.m.
