Speaking publicly for the first time since he performed plastic surgery on Kanye West’s mother, Donda West, who died shortly after from complications of the procedure, Dr. Jan Adams defended himself against suspicions surrounding him.
After claiming he would keep silent about Donda West’s sudden death due to the "sacred bond of confidentiality that exists between a patient and a doctor," Jan Adams started his media assault to attempt clearing his name.
In an interview with Los Angeles Time, the cosmetic surgeon, who has lost multiple malpractice suits throughout his career, has been arrested for DUI multiple times, has been accused of sexual assault and settled that case while his ex-wife took out a restraining order against him, alleged that Kanye’s mother accidentally overdosed on painkillers.
"When she left this office, there was no problem whatsoever," Adams, who performed a breast reduction procedure, tummy tuck and liposuction on Mrs. West, told the newspaper.
He also prescribe Vicodin to help her deal with the pain associated with the invasive procedures, explaining that she complained following what was "probably a rough night."
As he claimed to know "exactly" what happened to her, Adams declined to give any further details until he sees the coroner’s report in four to six weeks, which is the time it takes toxicology tests to be completed and an official cause of death pinpointed.
"I believe I know exactly what happened to her, but I will not comment on it until I see the final report," Adams added.
According to TMZ.com, the Los Angeles County Coroner already completed a preliminary autopsy report, but hasn't mentioned drugs as having played a role in Donda's death. The initial review found that she died "as a result of surgery or anesthesia and they started an investigation.
The Times noted that several hours after the interview, Adams called the paper and insisted that he had not been speculating about West's case in particular, but about a hypothetical patient facing similar issues.
As his career is in jeopardy now that the Medical Board of California is investigating recent reports of alcohol-related arrests and malpractice lawsuits, Adams admitted that there have been "some malpractice suits," but "99% of them are what we in this business call nuisance suits."
"There's nothing going on here that represents malpractice", Adams insisted.
The LA-based plastic surgeon, who was a regular on Oprah Winfrey’s talk show and had his own show on Discovery Health, (which was canceled following Donda’s death), is scheduled to appear on CNN’s "Larry King Live" on Tuesday.
