‘Ghostbusters’ Making a Comeback
After months and months of speculation, Vivendi Games and Sony Pictures reportedly joined forces to produce a series of games based on the "Ghostbusters" franchise.

According to Variety, the original cast of the movies has signed up to lend their looks and voices to a new game based on the hit film series.

Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis and Ernie Hudson have all agreed to take part in what the publisher hopes will be a series of "Ghostbusters" games from Vivendi's Sierra label.

Some supporting cast members have also agreed to come back, including William Atherton, Brian Doyle Murray and Annie Potts.

Both companies are hoping to follow on the success of other classic films adaptations, such as EA's "The Godfather" and Vivendi's "Scarface: The World is Yours."

"We noticed we did well on Scarface and were alert for new opportunities to turn iconic film products into games in a way that is a new manifestation of the franchise," Vivendi Games chief executive Bruce Hack said.

"Ghostbusters is unquestionably among the small number of movies in that class," he added, noting that in making both deals, Vivendi did a survey of gamers asking which movie properties they would like to see turned into videogame and "Scarface" and "Ghostbusters" were both in the top five.

Vivendi has sold more than 2.5 million units of last year's "Scarface" game worldwide, grossing more than $125 million and making it a solid success, if not quite at the level of top franchises like "Halo." Though Vivendi hasn't yet confirmed plans, a sequel is known to be in the works.

"This brand is a very important asset for the studio, and we feel it’s prime time for it to be rediscovered through videogames," said Mark Caplan, VP of Sony’s consumer products division.

The game’s story, which is said to take place in New York during a ghoul invasion, will be penned by the films’ original screenwriters, Aykroyd and Ramis.

Versions made by developer Terminal Reality are set for the PC, PS3 and 360, while Red Fly Studio (Mushroom Men) is working on versions for the Wii, PS2 and DS.

The game, which is set for a fall '08 release, will feature both multi-player and co-op, which will no doubt prompt maverick ghost fighters everywhere to try and cross beams.
