Actor Sean Kanan, of soap opera “General Hospital” fame, pleaded not guilty Monday to two misdemeanor DUI charges.
Sean Kanan, known for his role as the bad guy in “Karate Kid, Part III” and for his long-term roles in “General Hospital” and “The Bold and the Beautiful,” was arrested on Aug. 18 by LAPD on suspicion of drunk driving.
Monday he pleaded not guilty through his lawyer, reports TMZ.com. He is charged with misdemeanor counts of driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs, and driving with a blood-alcohol level of .08 percent or higher.
The 42-year-old is due back in court on October 22.
Back in August, Kanan posted $30,000 bail and was released. TMZ reported earlier this month that due to his previous problems with the law, the actor faces a maximum penalty of one year in jail, as well as a $1,000 fine, per count.
He was previously convicted of DUI in 1998, therefore a second DUI carries a minimum jail sentence of 96 hours.
Kanan began his acting career in 1984, when he played Ralph Macchio’s archenemy in “The Karate Kid, Part III.” In 1990, he joined Billy Bob Thornton in “The Outsiders.”
His soap stardom began in 1992, when he joined the cast of “General Hospital.” He played A.J. Quartermaine from 1992-1997 and was nominated for outstanding newcomer by the Soap Opera Digest Awards.
He also had a brief stint on NBC’s soap opera “Sunset Beach,” that ended when the show itself was cancelled. In 2000, he joined yet another soap, this time playing Deacon Sharpe on “The Bold and the Beautiful,” until 2005.
Coincidentally, new of Kanan’s DUI charges came one day after it became public that fellow “General Hospital” cast member Kirsten Storms had also been arrested for driving under the influence.
