According to a statement issued by the Australian Federation Against Copyright Theft (AFACT), the man, who is 21 years old used a mobile phone to record “The Simpsons” on July 26, the first day of its global release.
Within hours the Australian uploaded the copy on the Internet and the file has spread quickly through BitTorrent and other similar sites.
According to Adrianne Pecotic, executive director of the Australian Federation Against Copyright Theft, the pirates are using mobile phones instead camcorders.
"Unauthorised recording of cinemas is increasing and police have attended seven reported incidents of camcording across three states in the last six weeks, and more than half of those were using mobile phones," she said quoted by AFP.
The man was charged with copyright theft and he will appear in front of a court on October 2. If he is found guilty the man could be sentenced to five years in jail.
