'Best Friend' Talks About Lana Clarkson's Despondency
Punkin Laughlin, a club promoter that names late actress Lana Clarkson her ‘best friend,’ testified this week in the murder trial against music producer Phil Spector, describing Lana as a woman fed up with the whole Hollywood life.

Punkin Laughlin was on the stand as a witness for the defense this week and she talked about Lana Clarkson, the 40-year-old actress found shot to death in Phil Spector’s home four years ago.

Laughlin said Clarkson had grown tired of the constant struggle necessary to make it in Hollywood. Laughlin testified that the actress was depressed about financial problems, lack of acting opportunities and recent failed romantic relationship.

The defense’s stand is that Clarkson committed “accidental suicide” by shooting herself in Phil Spector’s Alhambra mansion on February 3, 2003. The two had gone to the music producer’s home, after meeting at the House of Blues in West Hollywood, where she was working as a hostess.

Spector is accused of having shot the struggling actress to death.

Notable in Laughlin’s testimony this week is that it is considerably different from what she told police investigators four years ago, right after Clarkson’s death. At the time, she gave no indication that the actress was severely depressed, as she did in court now.

Questioned on the subject, Laughlin explained that she is speaking the truth now and that in 2003, she “had to hold back things,” as she “didn't want to hurt people.”

The club promoter was also questioned over having reportedly said, “We need to fry that bastard for killing Lana,” shortly after Clarkson’s death.

Laughlin denied this, telling Deputy District Attorney Alan Jackson, Tuesday morning, her third day on the stand, “I never believed that, so it's something I wouldn't have said.”

That same day, forensic toxicologist Robert Middleberg testified that a urine sample provided by Spector more than 13 hours after Clarkson’s death did not reveal signs of intoxication in the music producer when Clarkson died.
