"I could not write a better script myself," Theus said on the team's website. "I was a part of the history of the first team that played here, so it's not just a job for me, it's a passion.
"To be able to go back and be the head coach of the Kings is absolutely a dream come true. I have absolutely come full circle now."
The media reported that Theus signed a three-year, $6 million contract. He replaces Eric Musselman, who was fired April 20 after just one season.
